Monsters vs. Aliens is a box office smash for IMAX

the animated movie Monsters vs. Aliens scored the biggest opening weekend for a 3-D film and gave studio DreamWorks Animation SKG the biggest weekend debut of 2009.

But that was nothing compared to what the movie did for IMAX Corp., the entertainment technology company that used to be known mainly for showing nature films on giant screens at local museums.

Monsters vs. Aliens debuted on 143 IMAX 3-D screens and instantly provided evidence that the struggling company is on the path toward a turnaround.

Collecting $5.1 million in domestic box office revenue, IMAX accounted for 9% of the movie's gross on just 2% of screens. And Monsters was the specialty exhibitor's second smash in a row: IMAX delivered 10% of domestic box-office for Watchmen when the graphic novel adaptation debuted earlier in the month.
