Imax agreed to form a joint venture with a South Korean theater exhibitor to operate up to 15 new theaters in the country as the giant-screen movie operator seeks to expand its presence in Asia.
The agreement with CJ CGV Co Ltd was signed following the success of the exhibitor's five existing Imax locations in South Korea, where the current 3D release of the blockbuster movie "Avatar" has generated more than $6.5 million, Imax said.
"It is a big market opportunity out there (in Asia) for the success of Imax," Craig-Hallum Capital analyst Mark Argento told Reuters by phone.
In December, Imax, known for digitally remastering Hollywood blockbusters, said it was in talks with at least five film companies in China. [ID:nTOE5B6073]
Some of the big movies last year created lot of incremental demand for Imax's products and the international market offers natural growth opportunities, the analyst said.
"We expect to see more type of such deals going forward," Argento said.
The deal with CJ CGV will add 10 new joint venture locations in the major cities in South Korea, and has an option to increase that number to 15.
Brigantine Advisors analyst Steven Frankel said Imax may not follow a similar pattern to expand in China.
"I think in China there isn't sufficient infrastructure around in reporting of box office receipts to form joint ventures. So, they have been selling equipments in China," Frankel said.
3D BOOST
Imax, which will report its fourth-quarter earnings on Thursday, said it has been seeing increasing demand in South Korea, and the rollout of its new locations is expected to begin later this year.
"We expect the company could grow in excess of 30 percent in 2010, which is a combination of more theaters, larger installed base of Imax theaters and better performance, more and more revenue growth at box office per theater," analyst Argento said.
Imax said that separately, CJ CGV will upgrade four of its existing Imax film-based locations to the company's digital projection system.

Imax will release a supersized version of "Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time" from Jerry Bruckheimer Films on May 28, simultaneously with Disney's wide theatrical release internationally.
Toronto-based Imax said the film, directed by Mike Newell and starring Jake Gyllenhaal, will be digitally remastered for a limited release on its international network of theaters.
The release marks Imax's first Jerry Bruckheimer film, and follows its successful release of Disney's 3D film "Alice in Wonderland" last weekend.
Here's the trailer for the movie "Prince of Persia"
The film's limited international IMAX release will be digitally re-mastered into the image and sound quality of The IMAX Experience(R) with IMAX DMR(R) technology. The crystal-clear images coupled with IMAX's customized theatre geometry and powerful digital audio create a unique environment that will make audiences feel as if they are in the movie.
"Once again our expanded network of IMAX locations is enabling us to offer moviegoers around the world more compelling content ideally suited to The IMAX Experience," said IMAX CEO Richard L. Gelfond. "The success of our international theatre network is a key component of our growth, and we are delighted to secure this highly anticipated summer title for our international exhibitor partners."
"We're revved up that moviegoers throughout our international territories will have the opportunity to experience this epic adventure in IMAX theatres," added Greg Foster, Chairman and President, IMAX Filmed Entertainment. "Walt Disney Pictures is continuing to add blockbuster releases to our growing slate, and it's a particular treat with 'Prince of Persia' as it kicks off our relationship with hit maker Jerry Bruckheimer."

Watch the new trailer of Tron Legacy here. The Tron Legacy trailer is available online today.
The Tron Legacy will release at the 3D theatres and IMAX 3D on December 17, 2010. Recently, Cindy Morgan's Tron Legacy trailer was referenced in theatres before Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland.
Here's another trailer in HD quality
While the many moviegoers who saw Alice in Wonderland over the weekend got to see the Tron: Legacy trailer, a few hundred lucky fans saw the trailer early, at a special event held at IMAX theaters in five cities around the world.
In even rarer company were the select few who caught the trailer at the special event at L.A.'s The Bridge, where director Joseph Kosinski and Steven Lisberger, the co-writer and director of the original Tron, were on hand to conduct an impromptu Q&A about the 27-years-in-the-making sequel.

Avatar Imax reach 200 million Worldwide Box Office
IMAX Corporation and Twentieth Century Fox today announced that James Cameron's Avatar, recipient of Golden Globe(R) awards for Best Picture and Best Director as well as nine Academy Award(R) nominations, has crossed the $200 million mark at IMAX(R) theatres worldwide during the weekend from Friday, February 19, 2010 through Sunday, February 21. During its 10th weekend, the film grossed $4.3 million from 179 IMAX theatres domestically, representing approximately 27% of the film's total domestic three-day weekend gross of $16.2 million. Internationally, the IMAX release grossed $3.9 million from 84 IMAX theatres, bringing the weekend's global IMAX total to approximately $8.2 million and the film's overall IMAX global total to more than $200 million.
"This incredible milestone not only reflects the mass appeal of watching Avatar in IMAX, it also reflects the significant expansion of our global audience base," said IMAX CEO Richard L. Gelfond. "Avatar was a perfect fit for IMAX and the type of event title IMAX fans and exhibitors embrace. We look forward to growing our audience even more as we continue to expand the IMAX network and offer moviegoers more of Hollywood's biggest films."
The IMAX release has delivered particularly strong performances across the international IMAX theatre network. In the Asia-Pacific market, the IMAX network has generated approximately $43 million from 38 screens, with 20 IMAX screens in China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, South Korea, Japan and Australia, each surpassing the $1 million mark.
In the Europe, Middle East and Africa region, the IMAX release generated more than $32 million from 35 screens, many of which surpassed the $1 million mark. Some IMAX locations have more than doubled that milestone, including Moscow's Nescafe IMAX Theatre, which has reported approximately $3 million in gross box office receipts from its single IMAX screen, and the BFI IMAX in London, which reported more than $2.3 from its single IMAX screen.
"The combination of James Cameron's revolutionary film and the enhanced image and sound of The IMAX Experience(R) has clearly resonated with Avatar fans around the world," said Greg Foster, Chairman and President, IMAX Filmed Entertainment. "We reached this milestone thanks to the strong word of mouth about the experience of watching Avatar in IMAX, and the hard work of all of those at Lightstorm, Twentieth Century Fox, IMAX and our global exhibition partners."
"Many exhibitors in domestic and international markets have pushed the boundaries of their operations to accommodate the high demand to experience this amazing movie in IMAX," added Phil Groves, IMAX's Senior Vice President, Film Distribution. "Many locations are still seeing strong business from extended show time schedules."
Avatar is directed and written by Academy Award Winner James Cameron and stars Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Stephen Lang, Michelle Rodriguez and Sigourney Weaver. Avatar has been digitally re-mastered into the unparalleled image and sound quality of The IMAX Experience(R).
Avatar is the story of an ex-Marine who finds himself thrust into hostilities on an alien planet filled with exotic life forms. As an Avatar, a human mind in an alien body, he finds himself torn between two worlds, in a desperate fight for his own survival and that of the indigenous people. More than ten years in the making, Avatar marks Cameron's return to feature directing since helming 1997's Titanic, the highest grossing film of all time and winner of eleven Oscars(R) including Best Picture. WETA Digital, renowned for its work in The Lord of the Rings Trilogy and King Kong, has incorporated new intuitive CGI technologies to transform the environments and characters into photorealistic 3D imagery that will transport the audience into the alien world rich with imaginative vistas, creatures and characters.

The international portion of Avatar box office stands at $1.288 billion, eclipsing the all time record $1.242 billion haul of “Titanic.”
In North America, “Avatar” may have to wait up to two weeks to sink the $601 million total of “Titanic,” Fox said. Moviegoers in the United States and Canada have chipped in $552.8 million, enough to replace 2008’s “The Dark Knight” ($533 million) as the second-biggest movie of all time.
During the latest weekend, “Avatar” earned $36 million in North America and $107 million from 111 international markets, far outpacing other offerings.
It led the field in at least 29 foreign markets, including France ($123 million to date), China ($102 million), Germany ($96 million), Russia ($95 million) and Britain ($93 million).

James Cameron confirms Avatar Sequel
According to a report (via AICN) from a very recent Q&A with James Cameron, the man himself did indeed admit: "Yes, there'll be another."
Unfortunately that's pretty much all Cameron said. The report from the Q&A is a bit vague, but they say that Cameron said "to expect the studio to want another one" and that, obviously, "a second film will be easier, as the technology now exists, thanks to the [first] movie." As in, half the reason Avatar took so long is they had to invent the technology used in it. Cameron also stated that "the plan had always been to make a trilogy of films. So there you have it, there will be another Avatar. But will James Cameron direct it?

Avatar has officially become number two grossing film of all time at the worldwide box office, passing $1.14 billion on Wednesday.
Cameron's next challenge is to beat the records set by his previous film, 1997 disaster romance 'Titanic', which continues to rule the No 1 spot with $1.8 billion.
Avatar's domestic earning was $374.4 million through Wednesday and the foreign haul collected $760.9 million to beat the $1.1 billion scored by 'The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King', the Variety reported online.

Discovery, Sony, and Imax gave a major boost on Tuesday to the new drive to popularize the forthcoming generation of 3D television sets. They signed a letter of intent to forge a joint venture and create the USA's first full-time cable channel that will exclusively offer 3D programming. It could launch by the end of the year.
The channel initially will feature lots of shows about science and nature, much of it from Discovery's and Imax's libraries. But the partners plan to license TV rights to general entertainment 3D movies, music videos, and game-related content.
"We'll be shooting some of our new (shows) in 3D and upconverting some of our existing content" from conventional 2D to 3D, Discovery CEO David Zaslav says. "And Sony's movie group, TV group, and music group are all beginning to develop content in 3D."

"The worldwide IMAX network was operating at near full capacity throughout the entire weekend," said IMAX CEO Richard L. Gelfond. "This success is a testament to the groundbreaking work of James Cameron and his team, who have raised the bar for storytelling and truly transported us into another world."

LOS ANGELES — IMAX Corp. said Monday the film "Avatar" made $9.5 million in box office ticket sales during its opening weekend in 178 of its theaters in the U.S.
"Avatar," a science fiction thriller directed by James Cameron and released by News Corp.'s Twentieth Century Fox, took in roughly 13 percent of the total sales in IMAX theaters, the company said. Total domestic sales came to $73 million.
The movie made another $4.1 million internationally on 58 screens, IMAX said. IMAX plans to release the film in 25 more locations in the next few weeks, including theaters in China and Japan.
"From the very beginning, James Cameron considered how the film would look and feel in IMAX, and as a result, Jim, Jon Landau and the Lightstorm team have produced a spectacular film that moviegoers are clearly reacting to with enthusiasm and strong word of mouth," added Greg Foster, Chairman and President of IMAX Filmed Entertainment. "Cameron's incredible vision and passion for pushing the technological boundaries of filmmaking, combined with a superb marketing and distribution campaign from Twentieth Century Fox has created an epic release that we are very proud to be a part of. We look forward to transporting more moviegoers to Pandora via The IMAX 3D Experience in the weeks ahead."
WETA Digital, renowned for its work in The Lord of the Rings Trilogy and King Kong, will incorporate new intuitive CGI technologies to transform the environments and characters into photorealistic 3D imagery that will transport the audience into the alien world rich with imaginative vistas, creatures and characters.

A Christmas Carol is, above all else, an astounding visual experience. Other studios either use 3D to enhance already superior films or attempt to hide mediocrity. Robert Zemeckis stands nearly alone is using this newfangled version of old-fashioned technology to push the boundaries of 'immersion'. Like The Polar Express in 2004 and Beowulf in 2007, A Christmas Carol is not simply a movie to be seen, but rather to experience. If the film is not as haunting and thrilling as Beowulf or as intoxicating as Henry Selick's more surreal Coraline, this still sets new marks for realism in the painted world. Zemeckis's artists and performers have partnered stunningly lifelike animation (there are no 'dead eyes' this time) with at once astonishing and invisible 3D effects work, creating the illusion of living inside a movie better than anything I've yet experienced.

It is often said that The Adventures of Tom Sawyer is a children's novel that adults can enjoy, while The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is an adult novel that children can enjoy. This statement in itself constitutes a form of elitism. Just because Huck Finn is a better, richer novel than Tom Sawyer, it must be presumed that the second story must not have been truly intended for children. This idea rears its ugly head in the discussion of family films as well, as poorly made family films are often labeled 'just for kids', while superior family entertainment is often accused of being secretly made for adults. The very idea of high-quality entertainment that is specifically directed at children seems to be some kind of oxymoron in the critical community. I have no idea for whom Spike Jonze crafted Where the Wild Things Are, but the film is a very much a high-quality children's movie.

Imax Role on The Evolution of Cinema
IMAX is one such advancement in films that has transformed the cinema-going experience to create much larger screens with higher resolution movies being projected onto them. Film shot for IMAX is shot on larger 65 mm film which is then run through the camera horizontally. This means that the IMAX film image is 69.6 mm wide and 48.5 mm tall, instead of the normal 48.5 mm wide and 22.1 mm tall.
The film is then run through the camera three times as quickly in order for it to be exposed at 24 frames per second.
Several films these days contain scenes that have been shot specifically for display on IMAX, such as the new Transformers sequel, Transformers Revenge of the Fallen, which features three scenes shot for IMAX.

Paramount Star Trek predicted to earn opening box office weekend of $70-75 Million.
The greatest adventure of all time begins with “Star Trek,” the incredible story of a young crew’s maiden voyage onboard the most advanced starship ever created: the U.S.S. Enterprise. On a journey filled with action, comedy and cosmic peril, the new recruits must find a way to stop an evil being whose mission of vengeance threatens all of mankind. Use the Fandango Coupon 2 for 1 to save your money on ticket!

Review by Craveonline
From Star Fleet Academy, to the alien landscapes, to the beautiful effects, each was greatly enhanced by the IMAX experience which gave an overbearing presence to the already behemoth renegade Romulan ship Narada and its captain Nero (the film’s antagonist portrayed by Eric Bana). The scale for everything seems so grand when watched in this format, from the Federation ship yard to the space dog fights. Although the effects were breathe taking the close combat felt confined and Closter phobic, luckily there is very of these scenes.
Fandango’s ticket sales were for Star Trek! The movie has already sold out hundreds of opening weekend show times across the country, including show times in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Washington, D.C., and much more.

IMAX Corp. today reported total revenues of $33.7 million for the first quarter ended March 31, 2009, a 43% increase compared to total revenues of $23.5 million for the first quarter of 2008. Operating income increased to $2.0 million, a $7.6 million increase compared to last year's operating loss of $5.6 million. The Company's first quarter net loss per diluted share of $0.06 compares favorably to the net loss per diluted share of $0.25 for the first quarter of fiscal 2008.
IMAX CEO Richard L. Gelfond stated, "We have often said that our introduction of digital and our joint revenue sharing initiative would yield improved financial results and we believe the first quarter reflects early progress towards this goal. Our highest level of sales-type lease system installs in over two years, the continued rapid growth of our joint revenue sharing theater network and our focus on cost containment were the primary drivers of our improved performance. We are particularly encouraged by our performance given that the first full-length new IMAX DMR release did not occur until Warner Bros.' WATCHMEN opened in March, the last month of the quarter. Given the early success of our digital roll-out, our strong line-up of film product and our focus on cost containment, we continue to believe that we should achieve strong revenue growth and return to profitability in 2009."
IMAX systems revenue increased over 100% to $16.5 million versus $8.2 million in the prior year period. The Company installed and recognized revenue on nine theatre systems that qualified as either sales or sales-type leases in the first quarter of 2009 (including three digital upgrades), compared to four in 2008. Revenue from joint revenue sharing arrangements increased nearly six-fold to $1.9 million, compared to $0.3 million last year. The company installed 22 new systems under joint revenue sharing arrangements (including five digital upgrades of theatres under joint revenue sharing arrangements) in the first quarter of 2009, compared to zero in the year ago period.
For the first quarter of 2009, film revenue increased 6% to $7.8 million, compared to $7.4 million in the first quarter of 2008. This included production and IMAX DMR revenues of $3.7 million compared to $2.9 million a year ago.
Gelfond continued, "On the film side, WATCHMEN: THE IMAX EXPERIENCE delivered a domestic per screen average of approximately $92,000 and MONSTERS VS. ALIENS: AN IMAX 3D EXPERIENCE has grossed an average of $126,000 per screen in IMAX theatres to date, outpacing both the 2D and other 3D versions of the film on a per screen basis. We are very encouraged that, in these challenging economic times, consumers are continuing to embrace The IMAX Experience."
Looking ahead to the remainder of the 2009 film slate, STAR TREK: THE IMAX EXPERIENCE (Paramount Pictures), will be released to 167 IMAX theaters today at 7:00 PM for a two-week limited engagement, followed by NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM: BATTLE OF THE SMITHSONIAN: THE IMAX EXPERIENCE (Twentieth Century Fox, May 22, 2009); TRANSFORMERS: REVENGE OF THE FALLEN: THE IMAX EXPERIENCE (Paramount Pictures, June 2009); HARRY POTTER AND THE HALF-BLOOD PRINCE: AN IMAX 3D EXPERIENCE (WB, July 2009); DISNEY'S A CHRISTMAS CAROL: AN IMAX 3D EXPERIENCE (Walt Disney Pictures and ImageMovers Digital, November 2009); and JAMES CAMERON'S AVATAR: AN IMAX 3D EXPERIENCE (Twentieth Century Fox, December 2009). The company believes it will also have an additional DMR title in the fall.
